Hans Christian Andersens Tale of the Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid lives in an underwater kingdom with her father the sea king; her grandmother; and her six elder sisters, each born one year apart. When a mermaid turns 15, she is allowed to swim to the surface to watch the world above, and as the sisters become old enough, one of them visits the surface every year. As each of them returns, the Little Mermaid listens longingly to their various descriptions of the surface and of human beings.
When the Little Mermaid's turn comes, she ventures to the surface, sees a ship with a handsome prince, and falls in love with him from a distance. A great storm hits, and the Little Mermaid saves the prince from a near-drowning. She delivers him unconscious to the shore near a temple. Here she waits until a young girl from the temple finds him. The prince never sees the Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid asks her grandmother whether humans can live forever if they do not drown. The grandmother explains that humans have a much shorter lifespan than merfolk's 300 years, but that when mermaids die they turn to sea foam and cease to exist, while humans have an eternal soul that lives on in Heaven. The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, eventually visits the Sea Witch, who sells her a potion that gives her legs, in exchange for her tongue (as the Little Mermaid has the most intoxicating voice in the world). The Sea Witch warns, however, that once she becomes a human, she will never be able to return to the sea. Drinking the potion will make her feel as if a sword is being passed through her, yet when she recovers she will have two beautiful legs, and will be able to dance like no human has ever danced before. However, it will constantly feel like she is walking on sharp swords, and her feet will bleed most terribly. In addition, she will only get a soul if the prince loves her and marries her, for then a part of his soul will flow into her. Otherwise, at dawn on the first day after he marries another woman, the Little Mermaid will die brokenhearted and disintegrate into sea foam.
The Little Mermaid drinks the potion and meets the prince, who is attracted to her beauty and grace even though she is mute. Most of all he likes to see her dance, and she dances for him despite her excruciating pain. When the prince's father orders his son to marry the neighboring king's daughter, the prince tells the Little Mermaid he will not, because he does not love the princess. He goes on to say he can only love the young woman from the temple, who he believes rescued him, but adds that the Little Mermaid is beginning to take the temple girl's place in his heart. It turns out that the princess is the temple girl, who had been sent to the temple to be educated. The prince loves her and the wedding is announced.
The prince and princess marry, and the Little Mermaid's heart breaks. She thinks of all that she has given up and of all the pain she has suffered. She despairs, thinking of the death that awaits her, but before dawn, her sisters bring her a knife that the Sea Witch has given them in exchange for their long hair. If the Little Mermaid slays the prince with the knife and lets his blood drip on her feet, she will become a mermaid again, all her suffering will end and she will live out her full life.
The Little Mermaid cannot bring herself to kill the sleeping prince lying with his bride and, as dawn breaks, throws herself into the sea. Her body dissolves into foam, but instead of ceasing to exist, she feels the warmth of the sun; she has turned into a spirit, a daughter of the air. The other daughters of the air tell her she has become like them because she strove with all her heart to gain an eternal soul. She will earn her own soul by doing good deeds, and she will eventually rise up into the kingdom of God.

Back in June 2010 I met a delightful beauty by the name of Anina who introduced herself as a blogger, self confessed geek and model. I immediately recognised I had just been greeted by a kindred spirit but so much more, Anina is the entrepreneur behind the the website 360 Fashion Network,  collaborating and podcasting with Nokia, handcoding all her own websites and was recently awarded by the Chinese government the title of "Top Foreign Model". Not only is she a tech wiz and web celeb but she speaks five languages and has her own mobile phone game for girls!
When Anina suggested we shoot together I naturally jumped at the chance and here's the result. A fantastic actress as well as a model, Anina beautifully embodies our theme, inspired by the tragic story of "The Little Mermaid". You can check out some of the behind the scene action on Anina's blog.
Its thanks to Anina I have my first published work in french magazine M:/P.
Hope you like!

Found another headshot from a Hair job I did mid last year. I'm pretty sure I post a picture of my hair post tinting on twitter. Loved the opportunity to work with photographer Simon Lekias.

Head Shot

Confession: I've been working as a model these past couple months without having a card to take to castings! Pretty bad form on my part, I have been promising Priscillas that I would auto-portrait myself but its just something I haven't prioritised in my manic schedule - until now. Not even sure if the agency will like these shots, if they don't I'll simply shoot a few more images with a little more styling, perhaps I'll get a make-up artist... but really I'd prefer not too, I see enough of my own face. I prefer to spend my time achieving beautiful images of fresh faces. Really I just get such a buzz, which I why I think I continually improve and feel I have so much more to give. You have to love what you do and I truly love fashion photography, plus I'm a huge 'photographer fan'. Inez & Vinoodh, Camilla Akrans, Knoepfel and Indlekofer, Sorrenti, Lindbergh, Greg Kadel, Laurie Bartley, Bruce Weber, Nicole Bentley, Justin Smith, Georges Antoni, Benny Horne, Paola Kudacki, Sebastian Faena, Sharif Hamza, Solve Sundsbo, Willy Vanderperre.... I could go on.

So these two shots - they aren't actually the final result of my work but photoshop is a wonderful/deceptive thing and while I was playing with effects I decided I really enjoyed this artistic look. It reminds me of the movie Ever After, the 'Da Vinci' portrait of Drew Barrymore.
Something different anyway.

Phillipa Doll

My test with Phillipa at Priscillas. As you can probably tell I've run out of ideas for names of these tests so its going to be lines from my favourite songs from this point on, can you guess the track? No cheating.
Anyway, Phillipa is a total babe and has a really bright future ahead of her. 5'11 with incredible long lines, hopefully we'll see her gracing the global runways next season. The two of us managed to score loads of great shots in the couple hours we spent together. I've decided to make it a priority to get loads of headshots  for models in future tests because these are really the hardest images to gain in your portfolio and the most valuable. The front of any models card needs that essential striking beauty shot and without it, its tricky to garner the right kind of attention.

Mrs Press

model, Joanna @ Priscillas
I can't believe its taken me so long to post these images. Its courtesy of Mrs Press that I was able to photograph these elegant and delicate garments and thanks so much to Clare for taking a chance and allowing me to use a smoke machine for the first time!
If there are any ladies out there searching for that perfect dress for that certain special occasion then Mrs Press is the place to start. Clare masterfully blends underwear with outerwear to highlight irresistible delicate femininity.  The girl knows romance.

Me on a Tee!

One of the most unbelievable things to ever happen to me, my face on a tee shirt at Zara! Thanks so much to the tweeters who sent me these two shots, long time followers of my blog might recognise the image from way back when I was using my useless little point and shoot camera, snapping this series in my bathroom. The people who I've been working with in Spain have assured me that I have some of the shirts arriving the post any day now so expect an outfit post very soon, my face on my chest. I'm not 27 by the way, I'm 24. Not sure how that got there.
Just weird/awesome.

NYC Baby

One part preppy, one part masculine, one part geeky, one part minimalist, bit of 70's, a splash of colour. Any feminine ensemble needs to be conservative... cover it up ladies!  Some of my favourite looks from  New York Fashion week, as in this is what I want to be wearing right now. Luckily for me many of these styles are actually pretty achievable with a couple shopping trips to Country Road, American Apparel, Seed Femme or the local Op Shops. If I had to pick a singular favourite show for New York it would be Karen Walker, I would burn everything in my wardrobe to replace it with entire collection. Rag and Bone, Alexander Wang, The Row, Yigal Azrouel, Phillip Lim were all outstanding in my eyes. Very very cool, but lacking the dorky element that I strangely find so endearing, the awkward skirt and sleeve lengths, oversized, mismatched colourings.

Now to patiently await my other favourites, Dries Van Noten, Celine, Jil Sander, Chloe, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Burberry Psorsum, Giles, Roksanda Illincic, Unique... so many more.

I'm so peeved right now my best friends Susie and Rach got to go to NYC for fashion week and I was left behind because I had to work. No fair.
Next time... or maybe the time after that.

Summer Set

I love the fifties style swimsuits that have swamped the market right now with this seemingly undying 'Mad Men' fever but I'm not sure that the high waist pants suit my frame. Voila! Fifties style for the treadmill inclined courtesy of Sunburn Swimwear and Seafolly. Love love love, so petite and fun. Now to put down this white choc Magnum and getting working on my end of summer bod a la' Jessica Hart. Its not too late right? Pfft, who am I kidding. Sydney has taken a pass on summer this year.

And wow a long time between drinks no? But I have a whole load of content backed up the hilt so prepare for the backlog to spew forth. I've been working (modelling and photography) interstate and travelling so my blog has taken a backseat for the meantime.
This week its back on, like donkey kong.

Private Moment

The incredible beauty that is Vanessa Breuer (Chic Management) - how useful for a new photographer to have such a stunning face for a friend!
All shot in Vanessa's apartment in Bondi.

Life has been so manic lately, weddings and engagements galore (including my own), training session after training session (my dragonboat team!) loads of work to do (modelling wise) and plenty of side projects. I'm still here though.
